The defining moment was when Dr. Zebulon Kendrick of Temple University discovered that when the compound was taken by mouth there was almost no increase in endurance capacity in rats.

During this time, I learned that several companies were developing a specific form of a mineral nutrient that was called a "chelate." The purpose of a chelate is to increase absorption of minerals. For example, binding magnesium to the amino acid aspartic acid creates a very strong chemical bond.

A chelate forms very strong bonds that allow high absorption rates for mineral nutritional supplements.

Using magnesium as an example, it has two + charges and these bind to the - charge on the two sides of the aspartic acid. This forms a very strong ring structure. Chelate means claw. These strong bonds are what make chelated minerals an excellent method for giving nutritional supplements.

Our stomachs have a very low pH and it turned out that this acidic environment broke apart the chemical bond of the magnesium-potassium aspartate used in the original patent. Since injecting the compound by-passed the stomach, this led to the increase in endurance capacity.
